The village of Taran is located approximately:

  • 7 km from Smolyan;
  • 25 km from Pamporovo;
  • 30 km from the border crossing with Greece;
  • 10 km from the municipal centre.

The village is stated to be situated on a main road at an altitude of approximately 800 m. Taran is stated to be the centre of a mayoralty which also includes the village of Elenska, with a combined population of the two settlements stated to be approximately 1,000 persons.
